10 Warning Signs Your Car Lift Needs a Professional Inspection
Aleigha FuhrmanShare
Whether you're running a busy commercial shop or you've got a lift in your home garage, it's easy to take that piece of equipment for granted until something goes wrong. Catching problems early isn't just good maintenance practice; it's a matter of safety.
Here are 10 warning signs that it's time to call in a certified inspector.
Β
Unusual Noises During Operation
A lift should raise and lower with a fairly consistent sound. If you start hearing grinding, clunking, popping, or a new squeal that wasn't there before, something has changed and it's worth having a professional take a listen before it gets worse.
Uneven Lifting or a Vehicle That Doesn't Sit Level
If one side of the lift rises faster than the other, or the vehicle looks noticeably tilted once it's up, this could point to worn cables, chains, or hydraulic issues.Β
Slow or Jerky Movement
Lifts should move smoothly through their full range. Hesitation, jerking, or a noticeably slower rise time can indicate hydraulic fluid problems, worn components, or a system that's struggling to keep up with the load it's rated for.
Visible Wear on Cables or Hoses
Fraying cables or hoses with cracks, bulges, or leaks are not something to wait on. These parts are essential and visible wear is often a sign that failure isn't far behind.
Hydraulic Fluid Leaks
Any residue underneath your lift's hydraulic system is worth investigating. Beyond the mess, a leak means the system is losing the fluid it needs to function safely and consistently.
Cracks, Rust, or Corrosion on Structural Components
Inspect the posts, arms, and base plates periodically. Surface rust can be common, but cracking, flaking, or corrosion that's eating into the metal can compromise the lift's structural integrity over time.
It's Been More Than a Year Since the Last Inspection
Even if nothing seems obviously wrong, most manufacturers recommend annual inspections at minimum, and more frequently for heavily used lifts. Problems don't always announce themselves before they become dangerous.
When in doubt, have it checked. If any of these signs sound familiar, it's worth scheduling a professional, ALI-certified inspection rather than waiting to see if the problem goes away on its own.
